When a Spirit Speaks Your Name

I have had many crazy experiences in the years I have been investigating. I have seen and heard things that I have never been able to explain. I have captured audio that gave me the chills, and sometimes freaked me out a little. 

Occasionally I recorded an EVP that captivated me. It made me want to find more answers for the client and the spirit that allowed me the privilege of capturing their voice from beyond. The answers were rarely available. 

Spirits don’t speak on command. They don’t always communicate in ways that we understand. They don’t carry on a conversation or always answer questions. It’s one of the many things about the paranormal that as investigators, we simply don’t understand. I am not sure we ever will. 

I have been on investigations where I captured a spirit, on audio, speak the name of one of my fellow investigators. I always wondered how that person felt when they heard their name. I always thought it must be a little unnerving to hear.

I always wondered why a spirit would have such a connection with one of us that they would feel the need to connect on such a personal level. Did they have a message for us? Were they trying to tell us something? 

Shortly after I joined A.L.P.S we went out to one of our first investigations, a residential. There was an orchard located right next to the property and there had been reports of activity in the orchard. Feeling that the close proximity of the orchard could possibly be causing issues with the property, we decided to send investigators into the orchard throughout the night.

Later in the night, Anna and I decided to move out to the orchard. I brought my new camcorder with me so I could record our experience. I was excited about being able to capture something paranormal on video.

As we walked around the orchard, in complete darkness, Anna saw something moving ahead of us. I heard her comment on what she saw, but I was too busy trying to change my mini-DVD that had just run out. I didn’t realize that she had moved on ahead of me.

As I fumbled with my camcorder, in the dark, I lost track of where Anna was. I remember wondering where she was as I made my way through the orchard. I eventually met up with her.

I went home and listened to the audio from my digital recorder. When I came to our time in the orchard I captured some audio that really shocked me. As I was wondering where Anna was in the orchard, I captured a female voice clearly say, “she’s up ahead Scott.” The voice had a pronounced accent. It was a “class A” EVP, which is the best quality you can capture. 

I let Anna listen to the EVP. We were both amazed at the quality and intelligence of what we captured. It had us both a little puzzled, but like most evidence we couldn’t explain it.

We moved on to our next residential investigation. During the course of the night I captured a female voice, with a heavy accent say, “Scott.” I was stunned! It was the same female from the orchard. Anna even listened and confirmed it.

Our next residential investigation none of our investigators captured an EVP, except for me. As Anna was speaking, I captured the same woman, again, say my name.

Our next investigation was The National Hotel. It was, as we call it, a “fun” investigation. We had no client. We were only there to see what we could find because the hotel intrigued all of us with its age and incredible history. My female friend never showed up.

I started to see a pattern. She always showed up during residential investigations, but she never showed up during our business or “fun” investigations. I would even try to get her to communicate with me during EVP sessions and she never came through. 

The more I heard her speak my name the more I wondered why she was following me from investigation to investigation. who was she? Had I somehow known her? Was she trying to tell me something? 

In the end I decided not to dwell on it. Maybe it was better not to know. Maybe we aren’t meant to know what it means when a spirit speaks your name.

Tech Review: Para Hunter Full Spectrum POV Glasses

I don’t normally jump into the realm of reviewing new paranormal equipment. Since I have had a couple people ask me to do a review of one of my newest toys I thought I may as well just blog it so anyone that wanted to could read about it before making a purchase.

There is not much new under the paranormal sun when it comes to equipment these days. Sure there are some new variations of the equipment that has been around for a while, but nothing that I have seen that I thought I couldn’t live without on an investigation. 

All that changed when I saw a post, on Facebook, from Jason Hawes of Ghost Hunters. I didn’t see the episode he referenced but he was letting everyone know where they could get a pair of the POV glasses he was wearing on a recent episode. I immediately went to the website to check it out. It was by far the coolest piece of equipment I had seen in a long time!

For the last year I have been searching for a small camera system that could be warn on investigations to record exactly what I was seeing. I found one that was very expensive and the quality looked questionable. I even thought about designing my own with little success. 

DVR systems are great for recording what is happening in an area but they can’t capture everything an investigator witnesses. How many times have you had a personal experience that couldn’t be captured because you were carry a camcorder and it just happened to be pointing in a different direction when it happened? All you’re left with is a great story to tell others. Maybe you witnessed something and you’re not exactly sure what it is that you witnessed. It would sure be nice to have a way to record it and review what you saw.

Now there is a way to record everything you are seeing. All in a light weight pair of glasses.

I am including the link because I was very impressed with everything to do with my purchase from them. I like to be able to share with others the places that I believe do a good job selling equipment. There are some shady places, on the Internet, to buy equipment.

The glasses look just like a standard pair of sunglasses. The camera shoots 720P HD video in .AVI format, they can also be used to take still pictures, and they have audio capability. It comes with a very nice case for the glasses, three different lenses in yellow, clear, and tinted that can be swapped out quite easily. It also comes with a 4GB micro SD card which will give you about 2 hours of video. They are capable of taking a card up to 32GB. I purchased a 16GB card separately. A cord for charging the battery is also included.

The glasses are capable of seeing in the Full Spectrum range which means that it can record in the IR and Ultraviolet spectrum. It has no built in light source so, when the lights go out all you are going to record is darkness. There is an IR light source that you can buy separately which Velcro to the side of the glasses. It has a small battery pack that you can just place in your pocket. The lights are good but I do wish they were a little brighter in order to see further. I highly recommend spending the extra money! I don’t know how many times I have had someone I know purchase an IR or full spectrum camera and they don’t realize that they have to buy a separate light kit in order to use the camera in the dark. Unfortunately there is no full spectrum light set designed for the glasses at this time. In order to record full spectrum you would have to carry around a regular full spectrum light.

The camera is very easy to use. Basically everything you need to do is done with one button. You press the button and a red light flashes to let you know they are on. Then the light turns to blue and begins to flash to let you know it is recording. When you want to stop recording, you hit the button again and the light turns to solid blue. When you are ready to record again you just press the button.

The other button allows you to switch modes. This changes the camera from video to still pictures. I haven’t messed with this feature because I don’t really have the need to take still pictures with it and I didn’t want to accidentally switch modes without knowing which mode it was on. 

While using the glasses on an investigation I did find one annoying thing. The blue light that flashes to let you know its recording is on the inside of the glasses, right next to your eye. It’s very bright and can be very annoying.

Since I was unable to find any reference to the battery life in the instructions or online I wasn’t sure what to expect when I used them on an investigation. I was able to get about two hours out of them before it died. If you’re going to use them on a long investigation I would suggest either planning the times you want to use them or recharging them for a while to use later.

Downloading the video is easy. You just open the .AVI file to watch your video. Anyone that has used a Sony Nightshot video camera knows what a pain it is to finalize the video and then having to use a program to convert the video into a format that your computer can use to view the video. Not to mention having to use those mini DVDs that only can record 30 mins!

I would highly suggest that you take some time to play around with these before you take them on the road. Record some video and download it onto your computer to make sure everything looks good. I found that the positioning of one set of the IR lights was causing the camera to pick up some glare from the light. I had to keep repositioning it until I had it so the glare was gone. 

Not much excites me when it comes to paranormal equipment these days, but I would have to say that these glasses are a must have in any investigators tool kit!  When all was said and done I spent about $200 for the glasses and the extra IR light. A little expensive but well worth it!

How long have you been interested in the Paranormal?

I have been interested in the paranormal my whole life. I have been blessed to live with my grandparents and have my grandmother be interested and learning things along paranormal, etc. So it was great being able to have a great discussion about the subject without holding back.

Have you had personal experiences? How many? Which is the most memorable? Why?

I have had a few personal experiences while growing up. Some which as being young just wasn’t sure but at least I had my grandmother to talk to help me understand the situations better. I have had experiences while I sleep not in such a way that I have read about dream paralysis but still interesting to say the least. I had heard a man tell me to get out of house when I got home and was bringing in groceries. It did frighten me I knew there was no one there my husband had gotten home shortly after, I had him search the house to verify that no one was there. So far my most memorable experience was while on a case and had two other team members with me at the time where I was touch on my left shoulder there was no explication for what I had experienced. I was standing almost in the middle of the room so no way to bump into anything. It was like someone walking behind you when you are into a conversation and don’t want to interrupted you, they touch you so that you don’t step back and trip over them. Everyone can relate to that feel on them. That’s what I felt it was interesting and I felt lucky to experience that.

What made you seek out a Paranormal Investigation team?

I have always wanted to be part of a team but never realized that it was possible until one day just thought I would see if there was something on Craig’s List. At first I saw information about another team but didn’t respond they were looking for a tech person with certain skills which I knew I didn’t have but I wanted to ask questions but didn’t. I kept talking about it with my husband it was driving me crazy knowing that there was a team close by that I could talk to possibly. He told me to contact them the worse that could happen was that they wouldn’t reply. So I looked and there was ALPS looking for new team members I didn’t hesitate to reply. I wanted so much to be part of a team that helps others and that is looking for proof of something more. I figure I had a lot to offer and hoped that I would be given a chance to prove it. Well, here I am part of a great team.

How long have you been with ALPS?

I have been with the team for about a year now. It doesn’t feel like it at all. It really has been fun and a great learning experience to be with the team.

How do you think an investigator should behave, and work? 

Believe it or not it is still a job and should be treated as much. We deal with the public and it’s a touchy subject. It takes some people some time to look up for help and the last thing they need is a circus act. We love our job and enjoy helping others, we take pride in our work. We go in there with professionalism, respect, and kindness. This line of work isn’t looked upon kindly by everyone and we take it seriously.

When not investigating, what do you do in the off time? Work? Other hobbies?

I work in manufacturing 4 days a week. I spend time with my family. I love sports either playing or watching. I have coached basketball and hope to get that opportunity again this year. When I have other spare time I’m always researching ideas for the team. I’m pretty crafty and frugal so trying to use that towards our team.

Of all the places you have investigated (historically) which one would you like to return and investigate further?

I would visit places again and again. There is always something new to learn. The one place right now I would like to go is The National Hotel in Nevada City Ca. The team had went before and had some great experiences I was not able to join them. We do hope to go again soon and I will be there to see what other experiences we may encounter. Myself and a few others went for a tour at Preston Castle I know for sure I would like to do a full on investigation there. The history of the place is interesting and the building even with areas falling apart is still beautiful.

When on a case, do you spiritual beliefs come into play? If so, does this effect how you handle the investigation?

I’m open minded and guess I’m spiritual and know that we do what we can to protect ourselves while helping others. We never know for sure what is in store for us but try and be prepared for what lies ahead. I go into a case with a focus of helping the client.

I love being an investigator the only thing hard I think is not the job we do but finding the funds to be able to do more and go further. If needed we do make it happen but to not have to worry so much would be great.

I’m the Case Manager. It’s been new position for me, a very important role. I feel very honored for them choosing me for this position. Is there anything more you can think of that might sound or be interesting to our followers and fans?

I really do love the way the team is into preserving historical sites. We try and get the public aware of the history of the places we have investigated and others we haven’t. Sad thing is history seems to be lost. I can tell you that when things are brought to light in a interesting way kids seemed to be more interested in history. History is around us and continues to happen but hard to get others to be interested in it.

A Residential Investigation In Wheatland, CA

Our team has been incredibly busy the last couple of months. We have been on some incredible investigations. It seems like each case brings us something new and exciting. Many of these cases leave us with more questions than answers. This case was no different!

Wheatland, CA is a relatively small town of about 3,400 people located 40 miles north of Sacramento, CA.

The Investigation

On a typical case we would usually send out a small team to conduct an interview and a short preliminary investigation to attempt to collect any evidence that would suggest to us that a larger investigation is warranted. This case was a little different. Our client was extremely eager to determine if we could find answers to the activity they had been experiencing. We were also extremely busy with a case just about every weekend so, we decided to conduct a more thorough investigation. We knew it may be difficult to get back out to conduct a full investigation, after the preliminary, with all the other cases we had pending. We always attempt to reveal our findings to our clients as quickly as possible after an investigation.

After sitting down with our client and conducting an interview we spread out over the house and began collecting readings to determine normal levels of EMF (electromagnetic field) and temperatures throughout the house. This allows us to determine if our readings during the investigation are normal or possibly the result of paranormal activity. This also allows us to determine if there are any devices or areas in the home that are giving off high levels of EMF.

Some older appliances tend to give off a high amount of EMF. It is also possible to have high EMF readings in wiring within the walls if the wiring is older or if there is a potential spot where electricity could “bleed” out through break downs in the protective coatings of the wiring.

These high EMF areas are extremely important to note since they can cause dizziness, hallucinations, paranoia, and nauseasness. If activity is reported in these areas it could be due more to the high EMF and not paranormal activity.

While we conducted our sweep we observed relatively low EMF levels throughout the house. As I moved into the kitchen I did notice that I suddenly began to feel dizzy and sick to my stomach. When I investigated further I found that I was getting high readings from my KII meter near the refrigerator. In order to determine a more precise measurement of the EMF from the refrigerator I used my MEL meter to take a reading. The MEL meter is a more advanced and precise meter that is able to measure exact amounts of EMF as well as temperature at the same time. The readings were very high.

I then asked Faye to come over to the kitchen and stand next to the refrigerator without telling her what I experienced. She reported the same feelings that I had.

We had to keep in the back of our mind that any experiences taking place around the refrigerator could be the result of high EMF. Although, the client never mentioned that the activity was taking place in this area.

With our sweep completed we turned out the lights and began our investigation. We started out in the living room conducting an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) session. We all sat in sort of a circle around the room.

I began asking questions and within a couple of minutes our KII meters started going crazy. Sometimes they would go off right after I asked a question and other times they would go off randomly. It seemed rather odd after a while.

As I looked across the room I noticed several lights blinking near the computer and determined that the cable modem for the computer was on. In order to ensure that the modem wasn’t causing the KII meters to light up I asked our client to turn it off. Even after the modem was off we were still getting the readings from our KII’s.

During our session it seemed as though whatever was causing the KII’s to go off was almost moving around us. Faye’s KII would go off, then mine, and then Cal’s. For most of the time it seemed like the focus was around me.

Before we started our investigation I had set up a video camera in the hallway to the bedrooms to attempt to capture the little girl that the client reported seeing. About 30 minutes into the investigation I had to go and change the DVD in the camera so I moved into the hallway.

When I reached the camera I realized there was still about 2 minutes left on the DVD so I decided to sit down and wait until it was finished. As I sat quietly waiting I began to hear what sounded like 2 people whispering in the hallway right in front of me. I could hear 2 distinct voices but I could only make out what one of them was saying.

As soon as I heard the whispering I called out to Faye and Cal and asked them if they were whispering. We make it a point to train our investigators not to whisper on cases because many of the evps we capture are in the form of a whisper and it makes it difficult to determine if what we are hearing is an EVP or another investigator. I will admit it is a very difficult thing to control because it’s just natural to want to try and be as quiet as possible during an investigation. In this case they informed me that it wasn’t them. I quickly went out to the living room and told them exactly what I had heard. I have to admit that it’s really cool when you hear something like that with your own ears instead of later during your audio review.

We continued our EVP session for a bit longer and then we decided to break up and position ourselves throughout the house. Faye and Cal stayed on one side of the house and the client and I moved to the other side.

The client and I positioned ourselves in the single bedroom on the other side of the house to conduct an EVP session. We were in there no more than a couple of minutes when I started getting this feeling like whatever was in the house either didn’t like that room or just didn’t want to follow us in there. I told the client what I felt and suggested we move.

There was an additional living room area on our side of the house so we sat down on the couch and began our EVP session. Aside from a couple of strange “thuds” that we couldn’t explain we didn’t experience much in the first 10 minutes or so. I wasn’t even getting any readings from my KII.

I began moving my KII around to see if I could get anything. As I did my KII started lighting up when I moved it around to my left. The lights only came on when I moved it and never very long in one spot.

I then began to focus on the area right next to me on the couch. Each time the lights would light up in an area that matched the exact outline of where a person would be sitting. It was almost like someone was sitting next to me! If this was actually a spirit sitting next to me or not I can’t say for sure. I do know that it was really cool and it got the attention of our client.

Something strange I noticed throughout the night was that as I walked around the house my KII would light up as though something was following me. I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t just a problem with my KII so I asked Faye if we could switch and see what happened. The same thing happened when I used hers. At one point of the night Faye was videotaping and asked if the spirit liked following me around and my KII lit up all the way.

At the end of the night we decided to conduct a “spirit box” session. A “spirit box” or “ghost box” as it’s also known is a radio that has been specially modified to continually scan radio frequencies. The theory is that the spirits are able to communicate via the white noise in between the stations. The continual scanning makes it nearly impossible to make out a sentence much less a word from a radio station. We typically have our “spirit box” set to the AM frequencies due to there being less stations on this band.

I won’t go into a lot of detail, in this section, about the outcome of our session. I will talk about that in the next section. All I can say for now is this was the most amazing session I have had in all my time using the “spirit box.”

So, after a couple of hours investigating we wrapped up and thanked our client for the opportunity to come into their home and investigate. I know our client was excited about what he had witnessed because he told us he would now be sleeping with a nightlight on!

The Evidence

We all went home and reviewed our audio, photos, and video. Aside from some dust orbs we didn’t capture any photo evidence. We also didn’t capture anything on video. I did share the portion with our client of when I heard the whispering in the hallway. The whispering was difficult to hear on the video but I was able to capture it on my voice recorder. My main goal was to show the client my response and provide proof that it wasn’t Faye or Cal.

As for the whispering in the hallway, I distinctly heard a man whisper “I don’t want to.” After I had asked Faye and Cal if they were whispering I went to the living room and told them exactly what I had heard. While it wasn’t the best quality on audio you can still make out what he said. 

We captured a male voice after I asked if it was still with us say “yes”, what sounded like a female say something that was difficult to understand, and an additional female voice saying something to the effect of “papa won’t let me in.” Her voice was so clear it sounded like she was standing right next to us. A classic class “A” EVP. All in all some good EVP evidence.

Now for our “spirit box” session evidence. We got two excellent responses during our session. One was absolutely incredible! It was by far the most amazing response I have personally heard from a session.

The first response came after I asked the question, “did you die in this house?” Several seconds after I asked the question we got a clear response from a female that said “yes.” My next question was, “what year did you die?” Again, several seconds later we got a response from what sounded like the same female say “January 1 1968.” At first it sounded to me like she said 1958. When I asked everyone if they heard it I was surprised that our client spoke up first and said he heard it and thought she said 1968. Usually our clients don’t know exactly what they are listening for so they don’t hear what we do. It is very rare to get a response to a question that is that long.

The Reveal

A couple of weeks after our investigation we sat with our clients to go over the evidence we had captured. They were quite impressed at our evidence and couldn’t believe that we had found something to verify the activity they had been experiencing. They were rather shocked after hearing some of the EVPs.

After reviewing all the evidence they had only two questions that they wanted answered, was their house haunted and if it was is there any indication that they needed to be concerned about the spirits. It didn’t take us long to come up with our answers. We all agreed that the house was definitely haunted and that the spirits were harmless.

Judging from the evidence we were able to determine that there were three possible spirits active in the house. We had heard a man, a young girl, and a woman on our audio. It seemed the woman had the most energy and we all agreed it was probably her who had been following us around most of the night.

Before we met with our client we did some research to attempt to determine if there was any record of anyone dying at that location. We also checked to see if there were any young girls or middle aged women that may have died around the time of the date given on the spirit box in Wheatland. We found that the only women that died were very old and the date of their death was before the house was built.

The house was built in the early 60’s. We have no way of knowing what was on the property before the house was built. We do know that there were several ranches located throughout Wheatland. It is quite possible that the spirits may have died on the property before the house was built and when I asked if they died in that house the spirit may have been referring to the house that existed at the time of their death.

It is believed that when a person dies and their spirit remains in the location they died in they are almost suspended in time. This is why, on investigations, you can sometimes hear what sounds like boots walking on a wooden floor in a house that now has carpeting. At the time the person died the home may have had wooden floors.

Our client expressed an interest in having us come back at a later date to investigate further to try to identify who the spirits were. We let them know that we would enjoy coming back but it may not be possible to identify the spirits.

We have a very busy schedule of investigations coming up in the next couple of months but we are hoping to be able to get back in sometime soon.
